Jony Ive and Marc Newson Detail Upcoming (RED) Auction in Teaser Video

The auction house, Sotheby’s, recently released a short teaser of its upcoming (RED) charity auction with curators Jony Ive and Marc Newson describing how they selected and, in some cases, created the pieces up for bid. The (RED) auction is said to feature several products ranging from a surfboard to a red anodized Mac Pro that showcase what Ive and Newson believe to be some of the best examples of modern design. Ive explained the following:

The criteria that we both had was we both wanted to own each one really badly.

As pointed out in the video, many of the pieces have been “tinkered with” to add a bit of (RED) flair, while other ones such as the aluminum Leica M digital rangefinder camera were designed from the ground up. Ive previously mentioned that he expects the camera to potentially fetch up to $6 million on the block.

For those who can afford the hefty prices, the auction gives people a chance to own works made in collaboration between two of this century’s most important designers. Bono will be putting on the auction as part of his (RED) fund, which is good for its partnership with major retailers such as Apple.

Those of you interested in watching the video can do so below:

The charity event which is being called “Jony and Marc’s (RED) Auction,” will be taking place this upcoming Monday with benefits going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Panoramic, 360-degree photographs

Panoramic, 360-degree photographs can be tedious and difficult to capture, despite projects such as Google’s own Photo Spheres and the upcoming BubblePod. Aerial snaps are even tougher to achieve, but the Panono – launching today as a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo – could make both forms of photography accessible to the masses.

Roughly the size of a baseball, the Panono is a throwable, spherical device with 36 tiny, outward-facing cameras. When you throw it into the air, the Panono is able to judge the highest point and then capture a huge, 360-degree by 360-degree, 72-megapixel image.
It’s almost impossible to produce these images any other way, unless you’re happy throwing around your smartphone, tablet or DSLR. The birds-eye perspective is perfect for busy locations, such as a party, music festival or convention, taking in absolutely everyone and everything that was happening at the time. The images are then previewed using the Panono apps for iOS and Android, before being stitched and archived for sharing on the Web.
The Panono’s creator, Jonas Pfeil, demoed a similar product on YouTube in October 2011. The video accrued over 3 million hits, but the device was simply too expensive to take to market.
Now, the team is pitching the cheaper Panono ball camera on Indiegogo. The campaign needs $900,000 to make the device a reality; backers will need to pledge a minimum of $549 to reserve a unit, although there’s also an early bird price of $499 for the first 600.

HTC One Max With 5.9-inch 1080p Display, Fingerprint Sensor, Sense 5.5 And More Is Announced [VDO]

It looks like HTC has beaten Samsung to the punch by launching its own smartphone with a fingerprint sensor before the Galaxy brand makers could get around to copying Apple’s iPhone 5s. Announcing the One Max today, HTC becomes the second major smartphone maker to announce a new handset with a fingerprint sensing security solution in the same number of months, leaving Samsung as the only one of the ‘big three’ to join the fray.
HTC’s One Max is, as the rumors and leaks had been suggesting, a rather large One. With a screen that measures 5.9-inches and featuring a 1080p display, the One Max is certainly going to live up to its name. Inside though, HTC has stopped short of ‘taking it to the max’ by reproducing the One’s internals inside this new, larger shell. The CPU is the One’s Snapdragon 600 variety, and the camera is the same as the one found in HTC’s current flagship device. Interestingly, that shooter has lost image stabilization along the way though.

Software-wise, the One Max comes with HTC’s Sense 5.5 software sat on top of Android 4.3. There’s no word on whether a Google Play Edition version of the One Max will be available, unfortunately. Google has a potential Nexus event on the horizon though, so it’s entirely possible one may get announced then. Maybe not, though.

One point of interest is the news that HTC has decided to buck its own trend by launching the One Max with a removable rear panel, meaning the battery can be replaced and the 16GB or 32GB of on-board storage can be augmented by an SD card of anything up to 64GB, should you really wish to carry your entire video collection around with you. Non-removable batteries has been biggest blot on HTC’s copy book for some, especially those that have wanted to expand their phone’s storage options as well. It seems someone at HTC has been paying attention.

The HTC One Max will be available in the UK later this week, with the international (read, US) release coming in time for the holidays with both Sprint and Verizon already lined up.
What do you guys think? Do you think the One Max is more than enough to bring HTC back into the smartphone game, or should they come up with something entirely new?

Awesomely Detailed Model Of Apple’s Spaceship Campus

Back in June – September 2011, one of the hottest Apple subjects was Steve Jobs’ latest project in Cupertino: the Apple Spaceship Campus - the relocation of Apple’s flagship headquarters from Cupertino’s Infinity Loop to a grassy 150 acres.

At the time, news said that Apple commissioned UK architects Foster + Partners in tandem with ARUP North America and Kier & Wright, a local civil engineering firm that counts the likes of eBay and Nvidia as clients.
The circular design was implemented by Apple themselves: an absolutely curved infrastructure void of straight angled glass with a courtyard situated in its core; cited as both to enhance campus security and internal circulations. The 2.8 million square feet on which it is situated on includes an office and R&D facilities for up to 13,000 employees, a 1,000 seat auditorium, fitness center, research facilities, central plant, and underground parking.
Perhaps Apple’s greatest achievement came from its environmental endeavors through generating its own electricity via an on-site Central Plant, open green spaces for employee enjoyment, and “to exceed sustainability goals through integrated design and development”.
Blueprints and mock-ups assume the project is approaching an impending green light per city approval and slated for an opening as soon as 2015.
Today, we’re back on the subject thanks to the San Jose Mercury News, who got invited to check out an incredibly detailed model replica of the campus with Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer.

Swipe To Switch Running Apps On Android Using Switchr

Switching between running apps on a smartphone or tablet is something that users just expect to be possible. Computers have no problems running multiple programs within different windows, so why can’t mobile devices do it efficiently, right? Well, there is a little more complexity to handling this type of expensive multitasking on a small portable device, but we do live in an age where our mobile phones and tablets can handle this pretty adequately. With that said, sometimes adequate just isn’t good enough which is why Switchr for Android is getting so much praise.
The developer of the Switchr app describes his creation as offering "task switching revolutionized". That’s quite a bold claim considering multitasking and switching between apps is baked into all modern mobile operating systems these days, including Android. The simplicity of what is proposed by Switchr and the beautiful way in which it manages to achieve it leads us to believe that a significant amount of thought and research has gone into developing this product. The one finger swipe concept will definitely appeal to users who want to shy away from the native cards based switching system.

The app itself contains two different available modes right out of the box; the Flow style and the Slide style. Opting for the Flow based setup will create an almost seamless carousel type switching effect when a swipe is detected on one of the compatible areas. The Sliding aspect of the app will allow the user to register their intention to switch tasks with the same swipe gesture, but this time Switchr will bring in a card based representation of the app they are switching to.

Settings within the app allow the user of the app to specify varying levels of sensitivity and whether or not Switchr should activate immediately on boot of the device. Trigger areas can be set with minimal fuss that outline where a user will need to swipe.
The error and problem detection that is built into Switchr is also fairly impressive. Detected issues around trigger areas and swipe detection are immediately flagged to the user with the option that allows them to revisit their settings and fix the problem.

The current iteration of the app will only be available to those devices running Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or newer, but there is talk of some upcoming Gingerbread support. Head on over to the original XDA forum thread for more info.

Apps Running on iPhone 5s Are Reportedly 2x More Likely to Crash Than On the iPhone 5

Apple’s new iPhone 5s houses a new 64-bit A7 chip and a new M7 motion co-processing chip, which both utilize new technology that developers for the iPhone have never had to take into consideration before. In addition, Apple just released iOS 7, which includes all new APIs, features, and interfaces. With all of these new things, comes room for error.

A new report from Crittercism suggests that applications being written specifically for the iPhone 5s with all of its new hardware and software features may be to blame for applications having double the likelihood of crashing than they would if the applications were run on the older hardware of an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c.

Quote Originally Posted by Crittercism CEO Andrew Levy
Anytime there is new hardware or software release, we see issues. Inevitably, over time, those issues get resolved.
While just hearing “double the likelihood to crash” seems like a rather large number to take into consideration, AppleInsider notes that the iPhone 5 had just under a 1% application crash rate. That would put the iPhone 5s at around a 2% crash rate, which when you think about it, is still a reasonably low rate of failure that you might hardly even notice. The last time you got a 98% out of 100% on a test, you were probably pretty happy with the end result.

Because we’re dealing with new technology here, it’s important to note that it will take some time for all of the bugs to be worked out. The general rule of thumb is that it’s a good idea to skip a generation in between upgrading your iPhone.
